Furry Friday 3/15/13

In today’s issue of Furry Friday I’m going to talk about fostering a dog or cat. Many rescues advertise “fosters needed”. People unfamiliar with the animal rescue process may not know what this means.

Foster homes are temporary homes that a rescue ,which does not have a physical shelter building, utilizes to be able to rescue more dogs or cats. Foster homes are the gateway between danger and a forever home. Foster parents provide an amazing service to a shelter or rescue. Without foster homes, the amount of animals saved would be greatly reduced.

Some people may think it’s cruel to house an animal and get it used to your home and family and then give it up. No, I don’t believe it’s cruel. What is cruel is unnecessary euthanization of healthy animals. Yes, the dog must adjust, but if there were no foster homes, the dog or cat would not have had a chance at all.

I’ve fostered a few times and no, it’s not easy. You get extremely attached and it is hard to see the dogs  (or cats) get adopted. However, it is extremely rewarding knowing that you helped a dog or cat get a new home.

I’m a big advocate for foster homes. It allows rescues to serve many more animals. If you are interested in fostering, contact your local shelter or rescue. They should have more information. You can even search the internet for rescue groups in your area needing fosters and complete the application right on their site.

Every rescue is different but all the ones I’ve fostered for covered all vet bills and provided crates, leashes, bowls, medication, and toys for the dog. One rescue even provided a stipend for food for the foster dog. Even though I’ve never fostered a cat, I’m sure most rules are the same. Visit Foster Dogs for more information on fostering.

So, if you’d like to help a rescue by housing a dog or cat temporarily…  do it! Become a dog or cat foster parent. It’s very rewarding!

 

Furry Friday 3/8/13

Today I’m going to do something a bit different. Instead of featuring dogs and cats available for adoption, I’m going to feature horses, cows, and other farm animals. Sometimes we forget that these animals often end up in shelters and need great homes, too.

The first two animals I am featuring today are horses, Shila and Aspen from Pets Come First, Inc. in Centre Hall, PA. Shila and Aspen are blind and were rescued from a cruelty case. They are unable to be ridden, but, would still make great companions. Aspen is a 10 year old female and Shila is a 9 year old Paint / Pinto female.

Next is Zelda, a llama from Southeast Llama Rescue in Lancaster, PA. Her post states that there is not much known about her at this time, but, once she is evaluated there will be more information. She was surrendered along with two other llamas, Ebony and Montana. They would like to keep the three together, if possible.

Mr. Bubbles is an adult, male, farm pig from Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester, NY.

Marley is a sheep from the Humane Society of Ohio Valley, in Marietta, Ohio. She is a  two year old Navajo Churro Sheep with an awesome dread-lock hairstyle.

The next animal is Norman, who is a Holstein Steer. He is one-and-a-half years old and as sweet as can be. He is well-socialized and would love a home with other animals. Furry Friday 5/25/12

Here is another edition of Furry Friday. Since I am helping a friend find a small dog to adopt, I decided to dedicate this edition to small dogs across the country looking for their forever home.

The first little furry friend for today is Angel from Delaware County SPCA in Media, PA. Angel is a 1-2 year old, pure bred, female,  Shih Tzu up for adoption.  She deserves a great home who will give her all the love and attention she deserves. The next dog is Louie from For Pets Sake Inc. in Reno, NV. Louie is a 1 and a half year old, male, Wheaten Terrier / Lhasa Mix. His post states “he is a little shy at first, good with other dogs”. For more information, visit Louie’s post or For Pets Sake, Inc.

Furry Friday 5/11/12

It’s time for another edition of Furry Friday! We are going to stay in PA this week and highlight both dogs and cats.

The first animal is a sweet kitty named Perdie. She is located in Jim Thorpe, PA at Carbon County Friends of Animals Shelter. For more information on Perdie please visit her post.

The next kitty is Genie from Petmatchmaker in Trevorton, PA. Genie is munchkin cat. I’ve never heard of this breed, but her post says she has “short legs”. She is absolutely beautiful with distinct markings. Please visit her post for more information.

The third, and last kitty for the week is, Jinxie. She is another beautiful cat with some unique marks. She is located in Bloomsburg, PA at Animal Resource Center. Jinxie is a young cat with personality! Please visit her post for more information.

Now, onto the puppies. The first dog I’m going to feature today is X’s Nickolas. He is a retired racing greyhound located at Monica’s Heart Greyhound Rescue. I had the pleasure of meeting Nick at a dog walk where I was selling dog treats to benefit the Relay for Life. The handler asked me if we could test Nick with my dog, Buddy Boy, to see if he got along with medium sized dogs. Nick passed with flying colors. He loves other dogs and is such a sweet boy. I was thinking about adding him to our household BUT he does not get along with cats. So, if you are a cat free house and would love to have a greyhound check out Nick’s post. Furry Friday on a Wednesday!

Since I’ve been slacking on the Furry Friday posts, I decided to post some animals today! I will be featuring both dogs and cats from around the United States. The first dog is Screetch a senior, female, Australian Shepherd from Casper, Wyoming. Screetch is visually impaired as stated in her post. She deserves the best home. The next puppy is Mario a young, male, Great Dane from Jefferson City, Mo. Mario is about 10 months old and is enrolled in the prison program. These types of programs pair dogs with an inmate who trains them and gives them the basic skills needed to become adopted. For more information on Mario, visit his post.

Shelby is a senior, male, husky / lab mix from Heart of the Catskills Humane Society in Delhi, NY.  He has been at the shelter since 2008. He deserves the best home to live out his golden years.Visit his post here.

The last dog for this week is Amber, a female greyhound from Macon, GA. For more information on Amber visit her post. Due to her high prey drive, she should not go to a home with small animals or cats. She is a beautiful brindle Greyhound and has a lot of personality as stated in her post.

Furry Friday 4/20/12

After a week break, I am back and here is Furry Friday!

This week I’m featuring dogs in PA. The first dog is Zapper, a wheaten terrier from In Home Rescue in Shenandoah, PA. Zapper was adopted and returned due to a flood in the previous owner’s home. He is neutered, utd on shots, crate trained, good with kids, cats, and other dogs. What more can you ask for? Oh, and he recently got his summer hair cut. So, he is ready to go. Our second dog is Charlie, a young, male, Collie mix who was also adopted and returned to Hillside SPCA, Pottsville, PA. Yes, I mention Hillside SPCA a lot because they are truly a great shelter (in my opinion)! Charlie deserves the best home. He is currently on medication for seizures. If it’s the normal seizure meds, they are not expensive and are easy to give. Visit Charlie’s post for more information on this cuddly guy.

Furry Friday 3/23/12

Ready for Furry Friday? Well, Here you go! Today we have picked three rescues to highlight. The first is a newer rescue located in Danville, PA. Karamber’s Rescue is a small rescue located in a boarding/grooming business near Interstate 80 in Danville, PA. The two ladies that run the rescue, Kathy and Amber, are two truly compassionate people that definitely take the animal’s best interests to heart and do everything possible to find them the best homes.

These German Shepherds were rescued from a life outside and will need house training, but are making progress. They would do best in a home where they are the only dog so they get proper attention. They are both very sweet and love attention.

There is also Neena, a sweet four month old Pit Bull puppy and Angel a 6 year old Alaskan Eskimo / Spitz mix who is a total sweetheart, good with kids, cats, and other dogs and deserves a wonderful home.

The next shelter is Hillside SPCA in Pottsville, PA. I know I’ve highlighted this rescue before but I think they are a great rescue that does everything possible for the animals they have in their care.

They are truly unique, drastically limiting the time their animals are in crates or cages and interacting with the dogs and cats as much as possible. Here are two dogs available from Hillside.

This puppy’s story is heartbreaking. This is Bear. He was stomped on by a juvenile visiting the home where he lived. He was stomped so hard that it broke his femur. The incident occured March 10th and he was not brought into Hillside until March 16th. He was in agonizing pain and in shock. Hillside took him to the Veterinarian and had his leg repaired. He needs the best home possible!! Visit his post for the whole story. He is a Shar Pei/German Shepherd Mix.

And this sweetheart also has a sad story. This is Captain, a young male Pit Bull, who was found as a stray with a bulging eye. After a vet visit, it was determined Captain has glaucoma and is currently receiving treatment. You can get more information on Captain by accessing his post here.

The last rescue featured this week is Animal Resource Center in Bloomsburg, PA. This is a large rescue that tries to help as many local animals as possible. It is a rescue, not an SPCA,  and it is also no-kill.

Princess is one of the dogs at Animal Resource Center. She is a 5 year old Irish Setter / Saint Bernard mix who was surrendered when her owner had to move to a high-rise apartment. Furry Friday 3/16/12

Ready for another addition of Furry Friday? I hope so, because I’m going to feature TEN furry friends today.

The first feature is Milo, a Belgian Shephard /Sheepdog Mix from OK Save a Dog in Prague,  Oklahoma. Milo looks like a sweetheart. If you want information on Milo visit his post  and contact OK Save a Dog!

The next dog is Bailee, a Labrador Retriever, from New Hampshire Humane Society in Laconia, New Hampshire. I love how Bailee is smiling for the camera! What a sweetheart! She reminds me of my Maddie Girl. Her post says she is a senior but has lots of energy. I can attest to that if she is anything like my almost 11 year old lab, Maddie. I am now going to feature some dogs without much information. This sometimes happens when dogs are first posted or at high-turnover shelters. I’m not saying these shelters are high-kill shelters, just explaining  possible reasons why no information is given.  Often times, these are the dogs that need homes the fastest. A sure sign is that no name is given to the dog simply a number.

Here are some sweet dogs that need homes ASAP. First, Spartacus,  Cty, #1819. Visit post or contact shelter!

Just to let you know, when I searched South Carolina there was 173,450 pets available for adoption. No, let me rephrase that, 173,450 DOGS  available for adoption. Now, working in animal rescue for forever I know it is near impossible to find homes for all these dogs. It’s the truth. I’ve visited a few of the shelters in South Carolina and I can attest that the conditions are not like shelters up north. They are downright horrible. After talking to staff in a few of the shelters, I found out they get a lot more animals than they can find homes for. They euthanize quite a few. This can all be stopped if owners simply get their pets spayed and neutered. Really, this simple operation saves millions of lives!!!

Fluffy is a one and a hair year old domestic short-hair kitty from W.A.R.S in Myrtle Beach, SC. Her owner is facing possible eviction so she needs a home ASAP. She looks like a sweet little kitty. Visit her post for more information.

Furry Friday 3/9/12

Time for another edition of Furry Friday! To all my new fans, Furry Friday is a series of posts that occur every Friday highlighting some of the many dogs and cats available for adoption throughout the USA. Furry Friday is not sponsored by Petfinder, any shelter, or rescue, it is simply my way of getting the word out that there are many dogs and cats in need of a forever home. Hopefully, this will inspire some of my readers to adopt a furry friend.

Now, onto the featured animals this week. The first dog is Maximus from Great Falls Animal Shelter in Great Falls, Montana. He was turned in as a stray so, not much info is given on his post. He becomes available tomorrow if he is not claimed by his owner. So, if this is your dog, he is at Great Falls Animal Shelter. If not, he is looking for a forever home. So, go visit Maximus. He looks like a sweety.

The next dog is Bear. He is an Alaskan Malamute/Newfoundland mix puppy from Bunkie Animal Shelter in Bunkie, Louisiana.  This is going to be one big boy! Though puppies usually get adopted quickly, it is not the case in many high-kill shelters. I am not saying this is a high-kill shelter, just defending my reason for posting puppies in addition to older dogs. If you want more info on Bear visit his post.

The last dog for this week is Chompie from Humane Society of Central Arizona in Payson, AZ.  Chompie is a two year old terrier mix who was found as a stray. He is wary of strangers but is loyal to those he trusts. More information can be found in his post. He looks like a furry ball of energy and a fun friend!

Here is a cat for all you cat lovers out there. This is Connie from Delaware Humane Society in Delaware ,Ohio. She is six months old and already spayed. There is not much info in her post so, it would be best to contact the shelter for more information on Connie.
