Furry Friday 3/8/13

Today I’m going to do something a bit different. Instead of featuring dogs and cats available for adoption, I’m going to feature horses, cows, and other farm animals. Sometimes we forget that these animals often end up in shelters and need great homes, too.

The first two animals I am featuring today are horses, Shila and Aspen from Pets Come First, Inc. in Centre Hall, PA. Shila and Aspen are blind and were rescued from a cruelty case. They are unable to be ridden, but, would still make great companions. Aspen is a 10 year old female and Shila is a 9 year old Paint / Pinto female.

Next is Zelda, a llama from Southeast Llama Rescue in Lancaster, PA. Her post states that there is not much known about her at this time, but, once she is evaluated there will be more information. She was surrendered along with two other llamas, Ebony and Montana. They would like to keep the three together, if possible.

Mr. Bubbles is an adult, male, farm pig from Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester, NY.

Marley is a sheep from the Humane Society of Ohio Valley, in Marietta, Ohio. She is a  two year old Navajo Churro Sheep with an awesome dread-lock hairstyle.

The next animal is Norman, who is a Holstein Steer. He is one-and-a-half years old and as sweet as can be. He is well-socialized and would love a home with other animals. He walks well on a lead and loves his chin rubbed and scratched. Please visit his post or MSPCA at Nevin’s Farm website for more details.

The last animal for this edition of Furry Friday is Petunia. She is a farm pig available for adoption from The Humane Society of Wichita County, TX. Visit the shelter’s web page for more information on sweet Petunia.

Petunia smelling a flower!

I hope you enjoyed this farm-friendly edition of Furry Friday! As always, Furry Friday is in no way sponsored by any of the shelters or rescues featured or Petfinder. It is simply my way of showing my readers the many animals available for adoption.

It’s time for another edition of Furry Friday! We are going to stay in PA this week and highlight both dogs and cats.

The first animal is a sweet kitty named Perdie. She is located in Jim Thorpe, PA at Carbon County Friends of Animals Shelter. For more information on Perdie please visit her post.

The next kitty is Genie from Petmatchmaker in Trevorton, PA. Genie is munchkin cat. I’ve never heard of this breed, but her post says she has “short legs”. She is absolutely beautiful with distinct markings. Please visit her post for more information.

The third, and last kitty for the week is, Jinxie. She is another beautiful cat with some unique marks. She is located in Bloomsburg, PA at Animal Resource Center. Jinxie is a young cat with personality! Please visit her post for more information.

Now, onto the puppies. The first dog I’m going to feature today is X’s Nickolas. He is a retired racing greyhound located at Monica’s Heart Greyhound Rescue. I had the pleasure of meeting Nick at a dog walk where I was selling dog treats to benefit the Relay for Life. The handler asked me if we could test Nick with my dog, Buddy Boy, to see if he got along with medium sized dogs. Nick passed with flying colors. He loves other dogs and is such a sweet boy. I was thinking about adding him to our household BUT he does not get along with cats. So, if you are a cat free house and would love to have a greyhound check out Nick’s post. He is such a sweet boy!

The next dog is Abby. She is located at HIllside SPCA, Pottsville. Abby is a 7 year old poodle looking for a home. Please visit her post or contact Hillside for more information.

The last dog for this week is Weatherby. He is a black lab from Haven to Home Rescue in Winfield, PA. He is five years old and good with dogs, cats, and kids. For more information on Screetch, please visit her post.

Furry Friday- 3/30/12

It’s time for Furry Friday. Today I wanted to highlight a few dogs that are extremely urgent and in danger of being euthanized. Warning: this post is pretty heavy and these dogs are extremely urgent.

There are many sites and Facebook pages that highlight death row dogs and try to get them out of shelters in time to save them. One, in particular, is Pet Pardons. This site allows people from all over to post dogs that are extremely urgent in the hopes of pulling them from the shelter in the nick of time.

Update on AirBud: His photo is marked SAFE and he’s awaiting his trip to a rescue. I’m going to highlight five dogs on death row in the hopes that someone can help save these babies. The first dog is Air Bud. He is a senior, Golden Retriever mix, who is set to be destroyed today. Hopefully, someone can do something to save this sweet boy. He doesn’t deserve to die this way. He deserves a loving home to live out the remainder of his years. If interested in Air Bud, you must call the Manhattan Center Shelter. When calling the shelter you’ll need this info: AIR BUD, Animal ID # is A0927640  The shelter # is 212-722-4939 (hit 0 for operator, do not leave a message. May need to hit 0 a few times. Click here for more info.

Astor is another dog from Manhattan Center. Her info is as follows :  ASTOR,  Animal ID # is A0926630.
She is a female brown pit bull mix, approximately 7 mos. old.  Again, shelter #is 212-722-4939 (hit 0 for operator, do not leave a message. May need to hit 0 a few times. Call shelter immediately if you are in the Manhattan area and would like to save this sweet girl. I also need to mention: the shelter will only release these dogs to certain rescues or adopters who go to the shelter and pick up the dog. They will not do anything if you only call. You need to go there. Click here for more info.

Next dog is from the Pet Pardons site. This is Shadow from Monmouth County, NJ. Shadow is very nervous at the shelter and is wearing a Thunder Shirt to help with his anxiety. If anyone is interested in Shadow click here or contact shelter by calling
732-542-5962 or e-mailing

This is Shep. He is a shepherd mix and he needs rescue immediately. He looks like such a sweet boy. For more info on Shep click here. He is located at Robertson County Animal Control, Springfield, TN. 615-384-5611. If you are interested call immediately. His deadline is today!

The last dog for today is also located in Tennessee and was posted on the Face Book page Tennessee Death Row Dogs, as well. This is Trooper. He is a beautiful Golden Retriever mix at the same shelter as Shep. Contact Robertson County Animal Control, Springfield, TN. 615-384-5611.

I know that today’s post is very heavy. I often get overwhelmed with the urgency of saving these death row dogs. But, the truth is, it is urgent and if anyone is interested and wants to help they need to act immediately.  I volunteered at a high-kill shelter when I was younger and I cannot tell you how quickly dogs were euthanized. So, if you want to rescue one of these dogs you cannot move fast enough. It’s so sad. It all comes back to sterilization and spaying and neutering your pet. So many lives can be saved in the long run if owners simply get their pets this necessary surgery.

Furry Friday is in no way sponsored by any of the shelters or rescues highlighted or any of the Face Book pages dedicated to saving these dogs. It’s simply my way of showing their faces in the hopes that someone will step up and save these dogs.

Furry Friday 3/23/12

Ready for Furry Friday? Well, Here you go! Today we have picked three rescues to highlight. The first is a newer rescue located in Danville, PA. Karamber’s Rescue is a small rescue located in a boarding/grooming business near Interstate 80 in Danville, PA. The two ladies that run the rescue, Kathy and Amber, are two truly compassionate people that definitely take the animal’s best interests to heart and do everything possible to find them the best homes.

Here are some dogs from Karamber’s: Gretchen and Thor

These German Shepherds were rescued from a life outside and will need house training, but are making progress. They would do best in a home where they are the only dog so they get proper attention. They are both very sweet and love attention.

There is also Neena, a sweet four month old Pit Bull puppy and Angel a 6 year old Alaskan Eskimo / Spitz mix who is a total sweetheart, good with kids, cats, and other dogs and deserves a wonderful home.

Please contact Karamber’s by visiting their site or calling (570)764-2801 and e-mailing for more information on any of their available dogs.

The next shelter is Hillside SPCA in Pottsville, PA. I know I’ve highlighted this rescue before but I think they are a great rescue that does everything possible for the animals they have in their care.

They are truly unique, drastically limiting the time their animals are in crates or cages and interacting with the dogs and cats as much as possible. Here are two dogs available from Hillside.

This puppy’s story is heartbreaking. This is Bear. He was stomped on by a juvenile visiting the home where he lived. He was stomped so hard that it broke his femur. The incident occured March 10th and he was not brought into Hillside until March 16th. He was in agonizing pain and in shock. Hillside took him to the Veterinarian and had his leg repaired. He needs the best home possible!! Visit his post for the whole story. He is a Shar Pei/German Shepherd Mix.

And this sweetheart also has a sad story. This is Captain, a young male Pit Bull, who was found as a stray with a bulging eye. After a vet visit, it was determined Captain has glaucoma and is currently receiving treatment. You can get more information on Captain by accessing his post here.

Contact the rescue by clicking here or here.

The last rescue featured this week is Animal Resource Center in Bloomsburg, PA. This is a large rescue that tries to help as many local animals as possible. It is a rescue, not an SPCA,  and it is also no-kill.

Princess is one of the dogs at Animal Resource Center. She is a 5 year old Irish Setter / Saint Bernard mix who was surrendered when her owner had to move to a high-rise apartment. Her owner was devastated. Princess deserves a great home! Visit her post for more information. You can contact Animal Resource center by clicking here.  Be sure to visit their site to see some of the many animals available.

Reminder: Furry Friday is in no way sponsored by any of the rescues or shelters featured or This series of posts is simply my way of showing my readers some of the many animals looking for their forever homes.
