Eating Healthy on a Budget

Does anyone find it extremely difficult to save money on your grocery bill while eating a vegan or organic / healthy diet? The price of organic, healthy, all-natural, and vegan foods can be overwhelming. I have developed a few tricks to saving money on groceries.

1) Online Shopping

I don’t live very close to any health food or organic stores and the price of gas is sky-high so, when compared with shipping costs, it is cheaper for me to buy my vegan / health foods online then drive an hour and a half to two hours to go to a store that carries the same products. Often times, I can score free shipping which is even better.

Some sites to check out include:

Drugstore.com

They offer great deals, free products when you purchase certain products, free shipping when you spend over $25 EVERYDAY, drugstore.com rewards dollars based on 5% of what you spend, and a great variety of vegan products. They have foods, personal care, hair care, cleaning products, and beauty products, as well as, vitamins, supplements, protein bars and more. Right now they are offering 25% off anything in their green and natural department when you enter the code GREEN20 at checkout.

Abe’s Market

This site has tons of all-natural, healthy, vegan, organic goodness. They offer many different natural products. They even have handbags! I’ve bought my nori sheets, Bragg’s Animos, and organic snacks here using a Plum District voucher. It arrived super quick and was a great deal.

Right now you can sample three products for only $2 shipped.

2) Fan organic and vegan food sites

Facebook is a great way to stay connected to organic and vegan companies and you know what? They offer coupons! Earthbound Farms and Nasoya brand tofu are two companies that offer coupons often.

3) Sign up for coupons

Visit your favorite product websites. Many offer coupons if you 1) like them on Facebook or 2) sign up for their e-mail list.

4) Daily Deal Sites are your friend

I mentioned Plum District above. I also use Eversave to purchase vouchers at discounted prices that can be used on organic products. Sign up now to be in the loop when they offer such vouchers.

5) Grow your own produce

I save a ton of money on produce by growing my own. Don’t have room? Nonsense! There are many options for spacesaving gardens. Just type in space saving gardens in Pinterest if you are stumped for ideas. Here is an awesome hanging garden made from a shoe organizer that I found on Pinterest.

My yard is not large and I am able to grow enough to sustain me all summer. Plus, we still have peppers from last year! I will learn to can my vegetables this year so that we will be able to save even more.

I will be expanding this tip in the next coming weeks by sharing how and when I plant my garden, what types of plants I choose, where I get my organic seeds, and drawing a price comparison of buying versus growing your own plants.

If you don’t want to plant at your home, check out co-op options or visit farmer’s markets to score cheaper produce.

Whatever you choose, there are money saving options out there for eating healthy. Your body deserves only the best!
