Homemade Dog Food

So, as most of my readers know, I have Siberian Huskies.  ( that is not my dog in the picture, but too cute not to share). Notoriously, huskies have sensitive stomachs and, one of mine in particular, has this trait to the extreme. Depending on what food we feed her, she has severe tummy problems and gas.

We found a food that semi-works but, after reading so many things lately about dog food recalls and fillers in dog foods, I have decided to cook all my huskies food from now on.

I’ve been researching food recipes and have known about many people feeding their huskies a raw diet. I won’t be trying that. I can’t stomach it (vegan). Though I would never feed my dogs plant based, don’t believe in it, dogs are omnivores, not herbivores.(Simply my opinion, by the way) I can’t do raw meat.

Here is a recipe just in case you are thinking of making all your puppy’s food also. I’ll be sure to let you know how it is going and how the pups love it. If anyone has a good, wheat free recipe please share. Wheat can cause tummy troubles and aggravates both my dog’s bellies.

This recipe is enough for a week. I may be making a month’s worth and freezing individual portions. I’ll let you know if I decide that and how the recipe changes for a month supply.

Homemade Dog Food- Chicken

7 cups cooked chicken

3 and 1/2 cup brown rice

3  and 1/2 cup mixed green vegetables (i’ll be starting w/ broccoli and green beans, then adding asparagus and kale)

1 and 3/4 cup – 2 cups chicken broth

Can substitute makeral for the chicken for variety. I developed this recipe after, Maddie, my 11 year old yellow lab was diagnosed with cancer a year old. She lives with my mom and after her diagnosis I researched recipes for dogs with cancer. Note: Maddie’s recipe differs a little bit, if anyone would like it, let me know.

Note: You should never feed your dog, onions, garlic, chocolate, corn (cannot be digested), grapes, raisins, and mushrooms. They are toxic to dogs.

Discuss with your vet, like I did with mine, before switching your dog’s food.
